Should we be allowed to be completely anonymous online?

In part III Social Media’s Cultural Political Economy of Global Space by Christian Fuchs in his Culture and Economy in the Age of Social Media book, he explains how social media has helped develop productive forces from industrial to informational. Because of this our activity online is monitored and our browsing habits are sold as commodities.

The internet is very difficult to be completely anonymous or untraceable. The guy who sent the threat to Laurier’s Science Building through an “anonymous website” was tracked down in England. Do you believe people should have the right to be completely anonymous and untraceable online or would this be dangerous?

  1. I believe that individuals should have the right to become completely anonymous online, however for security reasons I feel that online surveillance is crucial. Ultimately if everyone were anonymous online, a large majority of cyber crime would go unnoticed and the internet would no longer be controlled.

I recently came across this video on the Anonymous movement which i found quite interesting regarding the sheer power and influence that they hackers can have on the online word, here is the link:

  2. I think that online communities are so uniquely positioned due to our technological affordances that its almost impossible to say people should have complete anything in that type of digital space. Obviously with these fast advancing technologies the issue of cyber crime and surveillance is going to be a topic of discussion. Unfortunately I dont think our laws are up to date enough to dictate issues around being completely anonymous online. As humans we dont have the option of being completely anonymous in life so I dont think we should have different affordances online.
