Lifestreaming; Pros and Cons

Hi Everyone!

We were asked to read Lifestreaming: We Live in Public, and Designed in California: Entrepreneurship and the Myths of Web. 2.0, both chapters by Alice Marwick. Throughout these chapters the topics of power, productivities and labour were discussed. In particular Marwick mentions the benefits of lifestreaming.

Lifestreaming according to Marwick includes involvement of the networked audience and specifically Jessica Mullen explains it from a perspective that frames it as self-regulation as entirely a positive notion. Marwick explains Mullen's definition of Lifestreaming as a way to embrace living life in public, thus includes documenting daily activities working towards goals, gauging health and resources with online tools, sharing experiences for feedback, growing reputation as lifestream grows, and publicly eliminating what is holding you back in life (Marwick 215-216).

With this concept in mind, I find lifestreaming similar to someone recording one's daily events, experiences and concerns through journaling or using a daily diary. What are the differences between using this "older version" of lifestreaming versus the current concept of lifestreaming, as discussed by Marwick. Consider the implications partaking in a social life online and the power dynamics of this discourse. Also consider companionship and security in relation to status acquired through online measures.
