Facebook's Family Philanthropy?

A few weeks ago, our favourite entrepeneur, Mark Zuckerberg had a daughter.
The ensuing paternal bliss lead to the announcement that Zuckerberg, with his wife Priscilla Chan, have created the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative which intends to donate 99% of their wealth through philanthropic means.

It's important to consider conditions existing around this philanthropic venture, such as the fact that the initiative is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and not a not-for-profit organization. This means that the LLC has much less transparency, can be used for political donations and lobbying, and the Zuckerberg's can remove funds all while paying less tax. On top of this, the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative has been very vague about what exactly they'll be trying to improve, chalking it up to "the future" without referring to any specific organizations.

Given what we know about Mark Zuckerberg's willingness to exploit users for data, labour, and thus further capital gain, what do you guys think about this so-called initiative? Could it be well-intentioned or is the ultimate goal capital gain? Do you think it improves the public's impression of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook to make it seem as if the vast majority of his fortune is being used for philanthropy?

  1. It seems that this could have good intentions, however you are right there is quite a grey area as the couple have not made it clear as to what exactly these funds will be used to accomplish. This could be a means to avoid taxes but with such a large percentage being donated it is not very likely. I think that the public could look at this as Zuckerberg and his partner being extremely generous taking on a new project that could prove to be a future success.
